The Center for Independent Living distributed more than 200 Disability Brochures (Pub 3966) to their clients in 2006. They are becoming a subpartner of the disability coalition.
United Way is the Champion for the Earned Income Tax Credit Smartbucks Coalition in Memphis. They have recruited volunteers for the VITA program, provided equipment and they have developed & marketed EITC material for outreach which includes EITC eligibility, disability symbols and the local 2-1-1 number. For the upcoming America Saves week, the United Way is developing a strategy which will offer special incentives to the disabled community that uses a VITA site for return prep.
The 2-1-1 number is operated by Benjamin Hooks Central Library. They have assistors are available to respond to inquires from taxpayers regarding VITA site information, EITC eligibility & Disability initiatives in the community.
DeafConnect is an organization that assists the hearing impaired in this community. They are operating as an independent VITA site for the first time this filing season. Translators and volunteers recruited by United Way are available to assist taxpayers with tax returns.
